In 2001, Dave Johnson started Mercury Sound & Lighting with the goal of creating a technology company that would drive the audio visual industry further, and would provide clients with custom and diverse solutions for live events and integration. Professionalism, passion, integrity, compassion and confidence are built into every detail.
“I started Mercury in 2001 out of a borrowed trailer that I forged a deal to park in my high school’s parking lot,” said Johnson, recalling the early, scrappy origin of the company. “I borrowed some money from my dad and we opened up a Guitar Center Credit Card at 0% interest to purchase our first audio system.”
“The day that I was heading downtown to setup the actual business with the state, I had everything ready except for one minor detail – I couldn’t settle on a name for the business! In fact, I thought this was going to be one of the hardest decisions I needed to make. While wrestling with it, a friend of mine just suggested, ‘How about Mercury? Mercury is a good name!’ We ran with it. I went downtown and a few hours later we became a company, Mercury Sound & Lighting.”
“I remember early on thinking about how cool it was going to be to pull into gigs with truck loads of gear with our name and logo plastered on them. I was an 18 year old kid in my senior year, and this was my dream. I was driven and determined to make it a reality! I pieced together a system and began renting it out, one small job at a time. I graduated high school and Mercury was growing steadily. I went to the University of Michigan-Dearborn to study business with the hopes of gaining a corporate job and working my way up the ladder. It didn’t take long to realize that I had an entrepreneurial spirit, and that Mercury was going to be a life long passion. So I poured everything I had into building the company.”
